In the world of infrastructure, location and legacy often dictate performance. For Bit Refinery, our story doesn’t start in a sterile office park or a venture capital boardroom. It starts in a mountain outside of Morrison, Colorado, inside a former NASA facility built to withstand the rigors of the Cold War.
Since 2008, Bit Refinery has evolved from those high-security beginnings into a powerhouse of hybrid cloud infrastructure. Today, we operate 14.4 MW of capacity in Denver and across the country, but our core philosophy remains unchanged: providing the raw, unadulterated performance of bare metal with the reliability required by the world's most demanding data workloads.
The Morrison Legacy: Security in the Stone

When we founded Bit Refinery in 2008, we chose a site that was as unique as our mission. The Morrison facility was originally designed for NASA, carved into the Colorado landscape to provide a level of physical security and environmental stability that modern 'greenfield' data centers often struggle to replicate.
Starting in a facility designed for aerospace-grade resilience taught us a fundamental lesson: Infrastructure is the foundation of innovation. If the hardware fails, the software—no matter how revolutionary—is irrelevant. That heritage of 'mission-critical' thinking is baked into every server we deploy today.
Solving the 'Hyperscale Tax'
As the industry moved toward the public cloud (AWS, Azure, GCP), we noticed a growing problem for data-intensive companies. While the cloud offered convenience, it introduced three major pain points:
- The Virtualization Tax: The 'noisy neighbor' effect and hypervisor overhead meant customers weren't getting the full performance of the hardware they paid for.
- The Egress Trap: Massive bills for simply moving your own data out of the cloud.
- Predictability Deficit: Monthly bills that fluctuated wildly based on complex usage metrics.
We realized that for CTOs and Data Engineers, the 'rent everything' model was broken. We pioneered the philosophy of 'Own the Base, Rent the Spike.' By providing dedicated bare-metal hardware for baseline workloads, we allowed companies to reclaim 40-60% of their infrastructure budget while gaining significantly higher performance.
Scaling to 14.4 MW and Beyond
Our growth from that initial bunker to our massive 180,000 sq ft flagship facility in Denver (and our expansion to Seattle and New Jersey) was driven by a commitment to enterprise-grade hardware. We didn't just want to be another hosting provider; we wanted to be a performance refinery.
Today, our stack reflects that obsession:
- Raw Power: Dell PowerEdge servers equipped with the latest Intel Xeon and AMD EPYC processors.
- Modern Virtualization: As a premier partner for VergeOS, we offer a legitimate VMware alternative that integrates compute, storage, and networking into a single, high-performance OS.
- Data Sovereignty: With our MinIO-powered S3-compatible storage, we give companies back control of their data without the penalty of egress fees.
The Evolution of Services
As our capacity grew to 14.4 MW, so did our expertise. We recognized that raw hardware is only half the battle. Modern data teams need specialized environments for real-time analytics and AI. This led to the development of our specialized consulting branches:
ClickHouse & Trino Managed Services
In partnership with Quantrail Data, we’ve built the ultimate environment for ClickHouse and Trino. Running these high-throughput OLAP engines on shared public cloud instances is often an exercise in frustration. On Bit Refinery bare metal, these tools breathe, delivering sub-second query results on petabyte-scale datasets.
The BYOGPU Revolution
With the explosion of AI and ML, GPU availability became a bottleneck. We introduced our Bring Your Own GPU (BYOGPU) model, allowing enterprises to ship their own H100s or RTX 4090s to our facilities. By providing the power, cooling, and 24/7 management for a flat fee, we’ve helped companies avoid the predatory pricing of cloud GPU rentals.
Why 17 Years of Experience Matters
The tech landscape of 2024 looks nothing like 2008, but the physics of data remain the same. Latency matters. Throughput matters. Costs matter.
Bit Refinery’s journey from a NASA bunker to a multi-state infrastructure provider is a testament to the fact that performance-minded engineers still value hardware they can rely on. Whether you are migrating away from VMware's licensing hikes, seeking a home for your AI training clusters, or looking to slash your AWS egress bill, we bring nearly two decades of 'mountain-tough' experience to your stack.
We’ve come a long way from Morrison, but we still treat every server like it’s mission-critical. Because to your business, it is.
